Office Traditions
 The original office collaboration
tools were the telephone and meeting
rooms. Today collaboration technologies are
business tools that enable document sharing, desktop
sharing, chatting, SMS messaging, document transfers,
and even voice and video communications over the
Internet. Remote members of a project team can
work virtually on the same desktop. For these
tools to be accepted by many corporate users they have
to be as easy to use as the telephone or email.
From our experience at Vision TRE, most business
professionals have little tolerance for firewall
issues, network capacity problems, or learning a new
tool that is harder than the conference room's
telephone. As for the power users, Skype, Google
Aps, WebEx, VNC and many other applications bridge
continents daily to enable global collaboration.
But this might reveal the real issue. If
professionals are encouraged to collaborate outside
the company walls, the only system security is the
